Nothing really jumped out to me this week on the reality TV circuit.
So for this week, I will step off the reality TV box and step on the TV show box to write about Scandal.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the show, the story is about Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), a fixer.
In a nutshell, Olivia was a part of married President Fitzgerald Grant’s (Tony Goldwyn) campaign team and somewhere along the way, they fell in love.
As a result, Olivia left a very successful job at the White House and started Pope and Associates, a company with lawyers who fix situations. Sometimes, they have to fix their own lives and their own situations.
Scandal, written by Shonda Rimes of Grey’s Anatomy fame, is in its third season.
Last season, it closed with Olivia and Fitz’s affair being leaked to the public.
This season, Scandal opened with Olivia trying to “fix” her own problem while her meddling CIA-like father insists on wedging himself back into her life, despite destroying everything she loves.
But the most interesting part about Scandal is the relationship between Fitz and Olivia. Fitz is white and Olivia is black.
There has been outrage in the black community, especially on blogs, with commenters saying what if Fitz was a black man with a black wife and Olivia was a white woman.
Blogs
The blogs also say black women would essentially be upset by the show because it would portray something they don’t like and/or agree with.
They then couldn’t relate to Olivia Pope because she would be white.
But then there is the argument that Scandal is likened to a white master and his black slave girl mistress.
I don’t get the backlash. Scandal is a great show with excellent acting and a great script.
I will not participate in slamming a great show that has a black actress as its lead, something that hasn’t happened since the glory days of Diane Carroll.
Scandal is fiction and it is enjoyable. If you don’t like it or agree with it, don’t watch it. n
