Scott wins Grand Slam with course record (Update)

Adam Scott won the PGA Grand Slam of Golf with a stunning course-record 64 at Port Royal today.

Justin Rose had led the field by four shots at one point in the second and final round - but a bogey at 16 left him tied for the lead with Scott at six under.

The Aussie, smelling victory and the $600,000 first prize, had already birdied 15 and then eagled 17 thanks to a wonderful six-iron 190-yard approach to two inches.

Rose was able to only par the last two holes and Scott won by two, finishing eight under and seven under for the day.

Jason Dufner ended the tournament three under after a 70, while Padraig Harrington's woes continued as a 71 left him three over for the tournament.

Masters champiopn Scott's win did not come easy. He had to overcome a blistering start from Rose, who birdied four in a row on the front nine, and wind and rain before reining in a two-shot overnight deficit.

He then showed his killer instinct by going three under for the last four holes.

Scott said: "I got lucky on 17 and one went where I was aiming finally! It was a timely shot and a cool way to finish it off.

"I've had such a good time here and a really good time playing with the other three guys. What a cool event to be involved in."

He added: "I'm thrilled to come out on top. It was fun, but a trying couple of days here really, especially today. It felt like a long round out there but I was happy with the score.

"Standing on the 11th tee, it didn't look like a score like that was going to be possible, but I played very well and managed to slowly claw away at Justin. 

"After he made bogey on 16, I managed to capitalize on that by hitting such a great shot into 17."

Scott, who was given honorary membership at Port Royal by Premier Craig Cannonier in recognition of his course record, said the 15th was key, with him sinking his birdie putt while Rose's slid by.

"The back nine was going to be tough whether the weather got better or worse," he said. "It makes you hit a lot of good shots to have a good score. 

"As we made the turn, the weather got awful for a little while.  But, look, he played good, and his only mistake really was 16.  And he made a good bogey in the end. But I kind of took advantage of being back in the hunt and hit a great shot on 17."

Rose, who shot a two under 69 today, could justifiably claim that the pink jacket was won by Scott rather than lost by himself — but he agreed the 15th was the turning point.

"I was all over that 30-footer and I thought it's in the middle but with a foot to go it somehow misses and Adam drains a 20-footer.

"That was a momentum shift, because my putt to go three ahead was in, in my mind.  At that point it's quite interesting how you've lost the tournament by two, but I guess it just shows, no lead is safe really.

"Apart from 16, it is what it is, I suppose.  It all came down to Adam's finish.  He did really well, with two great shots into 17."

He added: "At four shots up I felt confident I was going to win but I was just going about playing my game. 

“I didn't have my best game all week really, and I'd have really been pleased if I had gone ahead and won because I didn't really feel like I had my best stuff.

“But I putted really well this week, which I'm excited about for the next five weeks out on Tour.  We have a big finish to the year and if I can keep rolling it the way I am, I think some really good things are going to happen.”
