SPCA annual fair a success

The SPCA received donations of more than 100 cans of pet food today at its annual fair.

Members of the public were still dropping off bags of dog and cat food as organizers closed the event, due to the rain, at 3:30pm.

Despite the soggy weather, the animal charity was pleased with the turnout.

Sara Corday, Bermuda SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) spokeswoman, said: “We’ve had people here in the hundreds. We peaked at lunchtime and then it started to rain at around 2:30pm and some people left after that.

“The White Elephant sale went very well, and we had more than 40 categories of dogs in our Parade of Breeds (by the Bermuda Kennel Club), which was a great turnout.

“The dog agility demonstration (Dog Training Club of Bermuda) went well and the Department of Corrections also did a demonstration as to how they train their dogs to work in the prisons.

“We’ve had a decent amount of donations of dog and cat food — more than 100 cans — and feel the event went well. Everyone had a good time.”

Organizers were due to close the event at 4pm but started packing away after 3:15pm due to the rain.

The event, at the Botanical Gardens, also featured a cat show, pet parade, face painting, children’s games, and story hour with The Reading Clinic. There was also a demonstration by the Working Dog Club.

The SPCA holds the annual fair to raise funds and to increase awareness about animal welfare and how you can help to protect animals in Bermuda.
