The Bermuda National Gallery has officially named its mezzanine the Humann Gallery in recognition of the longstanding support of the Christian Humann Foundation.
The naming was made in the presence of Governor George Fergusson and Mrs Fergusson; the Honorary Consul for France, Nicole Haziza; and the Honorary Consul for the Netherlands, Marijke Peterich.
BNG chairman, Gary Phillips, said: “Archival research has identified that the Humann family has been connected with Bermuda since well before the Second World War and that it was the vision of Christian Humann that led to the creation of the eponymous Foundation which was the first private foundation of its kind to be created under Bermuda Law.
“Well before his death in 1982, Christian had envisioned a ‘Foundation that would be fully committed to supporting the arts – both plastic and performance – as well as education and science related initiatives and enterprises’.”
The Christian Humann Foundation has directed financial support and encouragement to The Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, the Bermuda Festival for the Performing Arts, the Centre for Talented Youth (CTY), The Alliance Française, The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), the Reading Clinic and The Bermuda National Gallery.
