Diabetes Month is in full swing and two events are coming up to help support the cause.

The first annual Moon Walk takes place on Sunday and there will be a presentation by the Bermuda Diabetes Association’s Sara McKittrick on November 19.

The Argus Group has joined forces with the Bermuda Diabetes Association to support the cause. Argus will sponsor the organisation’s first Moon Walk for Diabetes as well as a lunch seminar on ‘Healthy Living with Diabetes.’ Both events are designed to raise awareness and support for diabetes education and outreach in Bermuda.

The Moon Walk fundraiser is a 5k walk taking place under the stars from 6pm to 9pm from City Hall car park. It will follow a marshalled walk and participants are encouraged to wear glow in the dark clothes and accessories.

Glow in the dark T-shirts and other items will be handed out to the first 200 participants at the start of the walk. Following the walk, participants are invited to join Mike Hind ‘Uncle Elvis’ who will be performing in the City Hall Car Park. Healthy snacks and refreshments will be available until the conclusion of the event at 9pm.

Tickets are $35 each. Participants can register online at www.ptix.bm, by phone on 297-8427 or by visiting the Diabetes Resource Centre located at 3 Beacon Street, Hamilton. Proceeds from the event will support the development and implementation of diabetes prevention and education programmes.

Lunch seminar

Secondly, Sara McKittrick, Registered Dietician and Diabetes Educator for the Bermuda Diabetes Association will be presenting a lunch seminar on ‘Healthy Living with Diabetes’.

The free seminar is designed to provide valuable information for those who are living with diabetes and will be held on Tuesday, November 19 from 12:15pm to 1:30pm at the Argus office at 14 Wesley Street, Hamilton. Limited space is available and those who are interested in registering for the seminar can call the Diabetes Resource Centre on 297-8427. Lunch will be provided.

David Hills, Chairman, Bermuda Diabetes Association, says: “Diabetes is a condition that affects how your body uses blood glucose, commonly called blood sugar and more than 10,000 individuals in Bermuda are affected by Type 2 diabetes. This number is increasing each year. The Bermuda Diabetes Association thanks the Argus Group for their support and for helping to educate people on the risks of diabetes and the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.”

Sara McKittrick, added: “The seminar is an opportunity for those living with diabetes to learn more about the importance of managing blood sugars, eating properly and understanding how to include exercise effectively. We thank Argus for its support in making this seminar possible.”
