Approximately 80 Bermuda-based colleagues of Marsh and Guy Carpenter volunteered on Friday to make various improvements at The Sunshine League’s property in Hamilton.

Since 2010, Marsh and Guy Carpenter colleagues in Bermuda have set aside a day for a company-wide volunteer initiative. For this year’s Community Giving Day, colleagues are painting the social service organisation’s building exterior and creating an outdoor sitting area and play space. In addition, colleagues will be planting winter crops in the Healthy Harvest sustainable garden, which is maintained by The Sunshine League through a partnership with Greenrock.

“We are delighted that our employees continue to embrace Community Giving Day and the mix of projects this year makes for a fun and gratifying day,” said David Ezekiel, Bermuda Chairman of Marsh & McLennan Companies and Chairman of Marsh’s Bermuda Charity Committee. “There are many children and families that depend on the services of The Sunshine League and we hope that our contribution today will assist the organisation in continuing to reach its goals.”

The Sunshine League has been in Bermuda for more than 90 years. While the organisation recently has transitioned out of residential foster care, the facility and grounds are still used for a variety of children’s causes, such as a life-skills summer camp and gardening for Tomorrow’s Voices children who have autism and other childhood developmental disorders. In addition, The Sunshine League is working towards implementing a transitional living programme for children who are ageing out of the foster care system.

“We were thrilled when Marsh and Guy Carpenter approached us with the idea of working together,” said S. Glenn Faries, MD, Managing Director, The Sunshine League. “While we are no longer a residential facility, we are still committed to supporting Bermuda’s children and their families. The work that’s being done today at the property and in the sustainable garden is a key component in fulfilling our vision.”

“Our work at Marsh & McLennan Companies touches business, industry, society and people worldwide and as such, we are committed to doing business in a responsible way,” said Christine Salerno, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Marsh & McLennan Companies. “I am pleased to be in Bermuda to participate in this year’s Community Giving Day, and I am proud of the employees here who have embraced our philosophy of giving back to the communities in which we operate.”
