Flashback: Athletes' glorious return?

Flashback: Athletes' glorious return?

It was a long journey and the athletes look pretty happy to be back on Bermudian soil.

This week’s Flashback picture, far right, shows some of our sportsmen returning from competition.

But what event was it? Where was it held? And do you recognize any of the people getting off their plane?

If you know any of the answers and want to share your memories with us, then get in touch.

Simply email [email protected] with your thoughts and the best ones will be published in the Sun next Friday.

Last week’s picture was of a team celebrating a prized wicket.

First Kim Swan wrote in, saying he thought it was “Wendell Smith celebrating with Kenny Phillips, Alan Douglas (and possibly Eugene Foggo). Is it a former St. George’s Cricket Club Cup Match team? Still working on the victim.”

Then Otto Trott picked up the reins, remembering it was the game between St. George’s v Australia on May 9, 1991.

“Kenny Phillip bowled Steve Waugh. That would have been the fourth wicket with the score just 62. Mark Waugh was fifth out on 88.

“There was a collapse when the sixth wicket fell on 114 and the eighth on 115. Wendall Smith, Clevie Wade and Allan Douglas, who are in the picture, all played in the match.

“I was at the game and Ian Healy rescued Australia, scoring 39 not out as the lower order fell around him. It was a wet morning and Anthony Braithwaite and Kenny Phillip had them in early trouble. St. George’s used only four bowlers and I did not remember that Noel Gibbons took three wickets.”

Who needs an archive when you have Mr Trott. Wonderful memories, thank you.

Keep the correspondence coming in.
