Sorority to host church service, gala

The Bermuda Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta will close out their centennial celebrations with a proclamation, motorcade, gala and church service this weekend.

The sorority started with a float in the Heritage Day Parade, greeted drivers with Johnny Barnes, held an education symposium and a cocktail cruise.

This weekend will be the finale with the Proclamation and the Olympic Style Torch on Friday, a gala on Saturday and a church service on Sunday.

Deltas around the world are participating in centennial events but on 22 chapters were chosen as Torch Chapters to pass the torch.

Bermuda is the one of two chapters outside of the US to receive the Torch.

Roxanne Christopher, Bermuda Delta president said the number 22 is significant because there were 22 founders of the sorority back in 1913 on the campus of Howard University.

“Only two celebrations have been recognised as part of the celebrations.

“It’s a big testament to the strength of the chapter in Bermuda that we have been selected to be one of the 22 participants.

“The other outside of the US is Japan.

“We are consistently working with our community. We are community soldiers and all of us have a role to play.”

Ms Christopher said thefraternity will hold a proclamation at City Hall on Friday(today for print)with music, remarks by Opposition Leader Marc Bean and a motorcade to St George’s with the Olympic-style torch.

 “All of these things are going to be recorded and showing in Washington DC in July in front of 45,000 Deltas.

“It’s very important that we have a many Bermudians come out and support.”

On Saturday night, the sorority’s 22^nd national president, Gwendolyn Boyd will be the guest speaker at the Gala at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess at 6pm.

“She has been very pivotal in the growth of Bermuda on a national level.

“She is a phenomenal speaker. Words can’t describe how phenomenal she is.

“She will have the Fairmont Hamilton Princess rocking and rolling.

‘This is a strong, powerful woman.”

In addition to the guest speaker, there will be a performance by United Dance Productions as well as a few surprises.

“For those who know, Deltas do it big. We’re going to do it very big on Saturday night”, Ms Christopher added.

To wrap up the week, the Deltas will attend a special church service on Sunday at St Paul’s AME.

“We have to close out our week with a day of worship. We also need to be refueled as we do the work of the Deltas.”
