“Frightening.”
That’s how National Sports Centre chairman Sean tucker described taking a leap off one of the tower at the new pool on Thursday.
Sports Minister Wayne Scott had challenged Tucker to a dive-off from the tower so the pair ditched their business suits for swim suits and took the plunge Thursday morning. Tucker jumped into the 17’ foot deep end of the pool while the Minister dove in.
Tucker laughed: “He challenged me when we were on camera having the roll-out of the Island Games — he challenged me to dive so I dove off.
“It was frightening but it was a lot of fun as well. I’d dive again but without all the cameras and the eyes watching.”
He said the publicity stunt was to generate interest in the aquatics centre. The two also used the floatable slide to show the pool has a “fun and family aspect’ to the centre.
Tucker said there has been a lot of interest in the facility since it opened this past week with people using it at lunchtime, before work and after school.
“We only hope it continues to grow,” Tucker said.
The pool is open from 7am to 7pm. The cost is $15 an hour lane use by adults, $12 for youth 13 to 18 and seniors over 55, and $8 for children six to 12. Family plans are available for $32, which would include up to two adults and up to four children.
Monthly passes are also available.
