Is it time to learn how to swim?

The Original Swim Bermuda is taking sign-ups for the summer. 

Dana Semos started this business in 2006 with people of all ages using the pool at her house in Paget to learn how to swim. 

“It’s something I liked to do in the summer when I’m not teaching music.”

Ms Semos’ method is based on the Red Cross certification and has been a Red Cross certified instructor for more than 20 years in swimming and life guard training.

Ms Semos said the programme caters to as young as six month-old babies to adults.

“I’ve had a couple of adults who were terrified non-swimmers.”

She said many of those adults were Bermudians who had never learned how to swim. 

However, Ms Semos said her typical pupil is from five-years-old to 11-years-old who become part of her progressive swim programme.

“I also do aquatot baby classes to help them adjust to the water. Those are from six months to 18 months with the mommies or daddies getting in the water with them. It teaches the parents how to acclimate the child so they’re not afraid of the water.”

She the aquatots do fun things like blew bubbles as they get used to having their faces wet. 

Ms Semos said one of the great satisfactions of this job is “at the end of the programme having the kids learn how to swim or having lost a fear of the water because they are more confident. “So if they go to a birthday party with a pool or go to the beach with their parents, the parents can breathe a little bit easier and the kids can have a little more fun.”
