Kubrick producer to host public talk
Stanley Kubrick’s producer Jan Harlan and fellow teacher Jim Fernald are to hold a public Q&A discussion at the screening of Stanley Kubrick: Life In Pictures.
The event will raise money for the screenwriting workshop led by the pair and organized by local filmmaker Lucinda Spurling.
The screening about the legendary director of films including The Shining and Clockwork Orange, is directed by Harlan and narrated by Tom Cruise. It will screen at Bermuda College’s North Hall on May 16 at 6pm. Tickets are $20 and are available from www.premierticketsglobal.com
Jan Harlan said: “Subjects could range from what caused me to make this documentary to Stanley Kubrick’s relationship with God. Typical questions are technical, about lighting, locations, how difficult was it to work with him, what did I enjoy or dislike, my specific roles as negotiator, organizer or recommending music. Questions about politics come up in connection with Dr Strangelove, Paths of Glory and Full Metal Jacket.
“How come he had so much freedom? Was he really such a ‘perfectionist”? How did actors like him? Did he want a married couple for Eyes Wide Shut?”
He said participants can learn from Fernald that the seed and core of any good film is the script. “I will try to complement his teaching not with any theories but with practical examples.”
There are still places left for the week-long workshop — Screenwriting In Paradise — from May 13 to May 18. Workshops take place from 9am to 5pm at Bermuda College Room G301. Anyone wishing to register should contact Spurling at [email protected] or call 799-7770.
The workshop is priced at $350.
