The Bermuda College Literacy Society is bringing former Def Jam Poetry spoken word artist Gemineye to the island to perform and educate next Monday and Tuesday.
Gemineye, aka Christopher Kuretich, will be performing to students and teachers and the community at large on Monday in the college library and on Tuesday at 2:15pm in the G301 lecture room in the North Hall.
Monday’s event is approved by the Bermuda Educators Board and enables teachers to earn professional development.
The Washington State-born poet made his first in-roads into the world of poetry in 2001 at New Jersey’s Euphoria Café hosted by HBO Def Poetry Jam’s Flowmentalz. The next year he was named the Grand Slam Champion of the 2002 New Jersey National Slam Team and repeated the performance the following year in 2003.
He has performed throughout America including for the likes of P. Diddy, Ludacris and Tommy Hilfiger during the first annual Hip Hop Action Awards hosted by Russell Simmons, Ben Chavis and Naomi Campbell.
Most recently he performed on the third, fourth and fifth seasons of HBO’s Russell Simmons presents Def Poetry.
A Bermuda College spokesperson said: “This powerful, and versatile slam poet, Christopher Kuretich, also known as Gemineye offers a timely and thought provoking message fit for young people.”
