Good Friday is for kiteflying, fish cake eating and good ol’ family fun.

The day is traditionally spent with friends and family and is focused around Bermudian traditions.

This year, St David’s Cricket Club is the place to be for all things family and fun.

The Gilbert Lamb Day starts at 11am on Good Friday and will feature a slew of events for the entire family.

There will be a kite competition, fish cake/hot cross bun competition, field events including three legged race, egg and spoon, tug-o-war, pie eating and hotdog eating contests as well as the Mohawk Grand Prix Go-cart Race.

Good old fashioned fun

Kamilah Cannonier, club secretary said: “Each year this event is more special than the last because in this era of technology and video games, we entice people to our club grounds with the simple promise of good old fashion fun.

“The Gilbert Lamb Day is an opportunity to show our club and community pride, to honour our traditions and to acknowledge the contributions of our deceased club and community members and that is special to us.

“We encourage people to come and join in on what Good Friday means to St David’s.

“This is not a pretentious event. This is a down home ‘we came to have fun’ day, so come out and have fun.

“We don’t overly structure our day so that parents can spend time with their kids, fly kites or sign up for a race.

“Our main event, the Mohawk Grand Prix, is the real crowd pleaser.

“This ‘soap box derby’ through the streets of St David’s is definitely a have-to-see.”

Ms Cannonier said the event had been held for 30 years.

“It is an event that my generation has grown up with and just as we have grown and matured, as has the event.

“It started as a member’s day to honour our longest serving president and has become one of Bermuda’s most anticipated and talked about community events.”

Asked what first-timers could expect, Ms Cannonier said: “The best of St David’s hospitality.

“Our club, our families, our food and traditions are on show for all to see and enjoy.

“This occasion may be a ‘fashion show’ to some, but we expect our guests to fully engage themselves in this day.

“There is ample space for kite flying and there are scheduled family fun events that we hope our guests will participate in.”

In addition to all the fun, there will be food vendors selling a variety of goods.

“This year will be Linda Pitcher with authentic St David’s cuisine, the Foggo family will also run a stall selling fish and other fast foods and our last vendor will be Sensational Delights offering jerk chicken, fish salads and much more.”

Ms Cannonier added: “We encourage people to make their way to our club before 4pm.

“The go-cart race will cause some traffic disruptions.

“There is limited parking at the club and surrounding residential areas so we also encourage people to carpool if possible.

“We would like to thank the residents of St David’s for accommodating this event and attendees.

“This is the place to be on Good Friday because we offer worry-free family fun.
