It wasn’t pack racing — but it was a wild sight.

Around 30 Digicel Bermuda workers took to the streets on mopeds wearing bright red sweatshirts advertising the company’s latest product.

The new Digicel Prepaid Daily Plan offers prepaid subscribers a voice, text and data package for only $3.50 per day. The plan works as a self service product in that customers can add the plan to their smartphones on their own by simply dialing a code - either *236# from their BlackBerry or *235# from their iPhone or Android.

Shane Mora, marketing director for Digicel told the Bermuda Sun said the idea to use mopeds came out “of a long tradition of thinking out of the box ideas that we try to come up with when we launch events.

“The reason we do this is because unlike other countries, outdoor advertising is very regulated in Bermuda. In another market we would buy a billboard and that’s how we would get out of home advertising to reach mass audiences in addition to traditional media like TV, radio and web.

“In Bermuda we can’t buy billboards so we have to challenge ourselves to take our message to the people and this was the idea we had this time around.”

Mr Mora said the company was pleased with the reaction it got from commuters and on Facebook. “The response has been great. When we first went out this morning there were a lot of people who didn’t look like they had their coffee yet, but as we were driving by, we got some smiles and people taking pictures of us so the response has been positive. People in the street stopped, smiled and waved.”

He added it was stressed to the riders to drive safely and obey the laws at all time. Wayne Caines, Digicel Bermuda CEO, said:  “At Digicel, we are focused on delivering convenient and affordable products and services that allow our customers to keep current and stay connected.  The introduction of this prepaid daily plan enables more customers to do just that.

“The inclusion of data makes this plan unique to any other prepaid offering in Bermuda and allows Digicel Prepaid customers to do more than talk and text.  We strongly believe that our customers will appreciate this opportunity to get it all for one low price of $3.50 a day.”
