Digicel has revealed its $25,000 sponsorship of the Beyond Rugby Bermuda initiative.

The contribution will help establish the Digicel Bermuda Middle School Rugby League. Beyond Rugby is a partnership between the Family Centre and the Bermuda Rugby Football Union and its aim is to engage youths who are considered “at risk”.

The league will comprise six teams from the following schools — Dellwood Middle, Warwick Academy, T.N. Tatem, Saltus Grammar, Sandys Secondary, Whitney Institute and Somersfield Academy.

Wayne Caines, CEO of Digicel Bermuda, said: “We want to work with the face of this country’s future — we are so excited by the partnership.

He added: “I cannot stress this enough. It’s critical for our boys and girls to know one another, to play together, to develop friendships with each other.

“This is a key component in strengthening our community and Digicel is proud to be a part of this initiative.”

Patrick Calow, Bermuda Rugby Football Union Development Officer, said: “This will not only allow for the development of better rugby players in Bermuda but we also hope it will create an environment where young people embrace the core values of rugby — respect, sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork and enjoyment — both on and off the field.”
