One of Bermuda’s top entertainers cheated death after an alleged drink driver hit his car in a head-on collision, he revealed yesterday.

And Mark Anderson, who performs as Sybil Barrington, the Queen of Bermuda, called for a get-tough policy on people who get behind the wheel when over the limit.

Mr Anderson, a professional driver with the Bermuda bus service, said: “I was very shaken up — I saw my life flash before my eyes.

“I’m normally on a bike. If I had been on that, I would have been dead.”

He added: “I just don’t think our judicial system is tough enough when it comes to drink driving. I’m very much interested in joining the Road Safety Council and getting into this arena.

“I just hope the courts look at this situation and do something about it.”

Mr Anderson added that — despite the head-on smash — he only suffered a minor injury to his arm and was wearing a seatbelt at the time.

He said: “The other driver didn’t have a seatbelt on and hit his head on the windshield so hard he smashed it. I was fine — I just had a small scratch on my arm.”

The accident happened around 1.30am on South Shore Road near the Harmony Club in Paget around a week ago.

Mr Anderson was driving towards Hamilton when a car coming in the opposite direction hit a wall, bounced off and crossed into his lane.

He said: “I braced myself for impact — there was nothing I could do. It happened so fast I didn’t have time to do much of anything.”

The grey Peugeot car Mr Anderson was badly damaged in the smash and could not be driven away from the scene.

Mr Anderson said: “The police came and they were very good — they took him in for a test and I understand he was arrested for drink driving.

“The car I was driving was damaged, although I don’t know how serious it is because it’s still being looked at.”
