Justin Rose won the US Open on Sunday, but some might say Phil Mickleson lost it.
Rose will now join Masters champion Adam Scott in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf along with yet to be determined The Open and PGA champions.
Rose became the first Englishman to win the US Open in over 40 years. The last one to do nso was Tony Jacklin, who was in Bermuda earlier this year, in 1970.
Rose finished one over par with Mickelson as runner up at three over. It is the sixth time Mickelson has finished as runner-up at the US Open.
At the press conference after the tournament concluded, Mickelson said: "Heartbreak... this is tough to swallow after coming so close. This was my best chance."
Mickelson had started the day on top of the leader board but bogeyed the third and sixth holes to send his day into a spiral.
Rose meanwhile battled his emotions as he accepted the trophy on what turned out to be a historic Father’s Day for him..
"I think a lot of us come from great men and we have the responsibility to our children to show them what a great man can be. I just couldn't help but look up to the heavens and think that my old dad Ken had something to do with it."
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf will be played at the Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda in October.
