Team manager David Gazzard was delighted his team achieved their goal, sweeping through the round-robin without losing a game before beating Italy 3-2 in a shoot-out to win the championship showdown.
It was a taxing week for the Bermuda team, who played in six games on consecutive days before taking a day off ahead of the championship game.
Several players fought through injuries, including defender Chris Coleman, who played despite a strained hamstring, to help Bermuda win gold in what Gazzard called an “heroic effort”.
The win officially makes Bermuda the 11th best ball hockey nation in the world behind the A-pool sides.
Gazzard also had high praise for tournament MVP and goaltender Yan Leclerc, who stopped all five of Italy’s attempts in the shoot-out that decided the championship game.
Leclerc was solid all tournament, allowing only six goals against.
“He really put in one of the best individual efforts that we’ve ever seen over the years,” Gazzard told the Bermuda Sun. “The fact he was MVP of the tournament speaks volumes to his level of play.”
