Long-jumper Tyrone Smith has claimed his first international success of the year in Paris before heading to Prague as his European season kicks into gear.

Bermuda’s Olympic finalist at the London Games in 2012 won Friday’s Meeting National de Bonneuil sur Marne in France.

Smith, 28, Bermuda’s national record holder, jumped 8.09m [26.5ft] with his fourth attempt to finish ahead of Nicolas Gomont (8.02) and Kafetien Gomis (7.80).

His win arrives off the back of his third place in the Seiko Golden Grand Prix in Japan, after which he told the Bermuda Sun he was still working on a new take-off technique and felt a new PB — the national record stands at 8.22 — was not too far away.

He said: “I feel there’s a new PB in the works. When I get the timing down of my new approach, I’m excited about what’s ahead.”

He posted the above picture of him competing in Paris on twitter, with the accompanying tweet: ‘The #DoubleHitchkick is coming together nicely. Just need to time up the landing a little better.

After moving on to eastern Europe, he provided another update, tweeting: ‘It's a cloudy, rainy, cold day in Prague... Headed to the track to compete!. Still, there's still no time like the present to #JumpFar.
