Elliot Primary School will be holding its fifth annual 250 Men’s Reading Challenge on Friday.

Last year, the school’s successful held its fourth annual 250 Men’s Reading Challenge.

More than 250 men took over the campus as they interacted and read books with Primary students from Primary one through to Primary six.

A spokesperson for Elliot said: “It was a great experience for both the students and participants. Special invited guests included the Men from the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity as well as various Members of Parliament.

“This year, we are all set to hold the reading initiative again and to show that men do in fact read books with kids.  Research shows that some of the benefits of reading aloud to children are: improved comprehension skills, exposure to various genres, provides a model of fluent reading, increased vocabulary and promotes a life-long love of reading.”

The school is still looking for male volunteers for Friday. The Reading Challenge takes place from 11 am-12 noon.

Any male interested in making a difference in the life of an Elliot Primary student, please call the school at 236-3091 or e-mail the literacy coordinator, Pauletta Francis at [email protected].

The spokesperson said: “We’ll pair you up with one of our students.   It promises to be another phenomenal event! We’ll see you there.” n
