Bermuda’s national ball hockey team got off to the best start possible yesterday at the World Championships in Newfoundland when they drubbed Hong Kong 8-1.
Bermuda, who is playing in Pool B, got a hat-trick from game MVP JM Tremblay.
The team put Hong Kong on notice early in the first period when Tom Worthington-White scored a short-handed goal for Bermuda.
Chris Merritt and Matt Benson also set off the red light in the opening period to put Bermuda up 3-0.
Tremblay had the lone goal in the second period before Bermuda exploded for four in the third to win easily.
The team kept pressure up on Honk Kong for much of the game, dominating play by the ball in their zone.
Bermuda’s goalkeeper Yan Leclerc wasn’t tested very often.
David Gazzard said in a press release: “Yan Leclarc played an excellent game for Bermuda in net and was deserving of a shutout but unfortunately a strange bounce would find its way past him for Hong Kong’s only goal.”
Gazzard described the victory as “a solid team effort… in our quest for B Pool gold.”
Bermuda will play Italy on Monday evening. Italy played to a 3-3 tie in their opening round game against Israel.
Also in Bermuda’s Pool B are Great Britain, Cayman and Armenia.
