Mike Corday, cricket chairman at Somerset said: “We’re pretty darn confident we have a winner. It was a case of not wanting to fix something that wasn’t broken. We could have changed some of the players but that wouldn’t necessarily mean we were strengthening the team. It would be silly to change something just for the sake of change.” He spoke with Don Burgess about the squad.

Jekon Edness, 29
Captain
Right-hand bat
Wicket keeper

CUP MATCH STATS
Inn       No        Runs    Avg     HS
9          1          168      19.75   25

He is perhaps the best gloveman in the island. He’s a fantastic wicket keeper and a calm leader. This year he’s really batting well.
This is his third year as captain and once you get that win under your belt, your confidence comes up a bit.
Jekon is a smart guy; and an intelligent guy so he’ll use what he learned last year at St George’s.

Stephen Outerbridge, 30
Vice-captain
Left-hand bat

CUP MATCH STATS
Inn       No        Runs    Avg     HS
10        0          292      29.2     54
O          M         Runs    W         Eco
7          3          15        0          2.14

Stephen is just a solid cricketer. He has a good bat, one that we can rely on. he is very knowledgeable on how to play the game. He is Mr Reliable. He is committed to the game.
On top of that he has a great attitude and we’re expecting him to score some runs. We need him to sit up and bat.

Greg Maybury, 20
Left-hand bat
Right-arm medium-fast

CUP MATCH STATS
Inn       No        Runs    Avg     HS
1                      0          15        15        15
O          M         Runs    W         Eco
14.2     4          45        5          3.17

Greg is a fantastic strike bowler. Another very intelligent cricketer. He brings a professional attitude to the game.
He is dangerous — once he gets his tail up, it will be trouble for St George’s. He is very motivated to win if he knows he has to bowl. He doesn’t like to lose.

Chris Douglas, 23
Left-hand bat
Right-arm off break

CUP MATCH STATS
Inn       No        Runs    Avg     HS
5          0          102      20.40   34
O          M         Runs    W         Eco
9          2          29        2          3.22

Chris Douglas is a character. He is a talented all-round cricketer. people know him mainly as a batsman, but they don’t realise he can bowl as well. He really knows how to turn the ball. He is a very exciting bat, especially once he gets going. He then becomes the nicest guy to watch. He is just controlled aggression — it’s almost like he says “If I want to score runs, I’ll score them.” A very sound technical bat.

Janeiro Tucker, 38
Right-hand bat
Right-arm medium

CUP MATCH STATS
Inn       No        Runs    Avg     HS
26        4          1270    57.73   186
O          M         Runs    W         Eco
141      27        511      17        3.62

What can I say about Mr Cup Match that hasn’t already been said? He’s reliable and, if I was a bowler, I wouldn’t want to be bowling at him too often. Janeiro is a sold, steady player. We can count on him to be consistent with the bat and the ball. He’s earned the Mr Cup Match title. Everybody from our neck of the woods would like to see him cross Charlie Marshall’s score as top Cup Match batsman.

Malachi Jones, 24
Right-hand bat
Right-arm medium fast

CUP MATCH STATS
Inn       No        Runs    Avg     HS
11        1          194      19.40   57
O          M         Runs    W         Eco
113.2   26        359      17        3.17

Malachi is probably the top three-point man in the island right now — batting, bowling and fielding — Malchi is in top form right now. Malachi is still young and we can count on him for many more years to come.

Terryn Fray, 22
Right-hand bat

CUP MATCH STATS
Inn       No        Runs    Avg     HS
4          1          80        26.67   33

Terryn, if he plays as we expect, can sit up and bat for a long spell. Terryn is very, very technical batsman. He is a really good opening bat who is technically sound. He doesn’t make too many mistakes and he is very patient when he is in. We’ll see what happens this year.

Tre Manders, 18
Right-hand bat

CUP MATCH STATS
Inn       No        Runs    Avg     HS
1                      0          29        29        29

Tre is another one who is just beginning to hit form. In his last few innings, he has really started to look the part. He gives us another option as an early order bat. He is definitely one that we’re counting on for the future. He was a colt last year and he did what we asked him to do and batted quite solidly. You’re only going to see better and better things from Tre.

Derrick Brangman, 25
Right-hand bat
Right-arm leg break

CUP MATCH STATS
Inn       No        Runs    Avg     HS
2          0          10        5          10
O          M         Runs    W         Eco
16        0          58        2          3.63

Derrick is another good all-round cricketer we have at Somerset. he is a good off-strike bowler. He is a good spinner and he can hold a bat too. He looked solid in the trial matches and for his club with both the ball and the bat.

Kamau Leverock, 18
Left-hand bat
Left-arm medium

CUP MATCH STATS
Inn       No        Runs    Avg     HS
3          0          51        17        43
O          M         Runs    W         Eco
24        4          93        3          3.88

Kamau is just 18 and this is his third Cup Match for Somerset. He is another young product who has tremendous potential. We’re expecting good things out of his bowling this year. He has a good cricket education with all - bat, ball and fielding. Kamau has more to offer us. We definitely haven’t seen the best of Kamau either.

Jacobi Robinson, 28
Right-hand bat
Right-arm off break
CUP MATCH STATS
Inn       No        Runs    Avg     HS
13        2          179      16.27   63
O          M         Runs    W         Eco
138.2   21        592      24        4.28

He is one of the top spinners in the island. He made the change from being a medium pace and it’s paid off. He’s one of the top wicket takers. He’s right up there with the other spinners and we’re hoping he will come good for us. He is also an explosive bat. If we need that type of innings from him, he can give it to us. Jacobi hits the ball hard, but he can sit up and bat as well.
