Respect key to award
Sportsmanship will be taken into consideration when the Safe Hands trophy is handed out at this year’s Cup Match.
The award has traditionally gone to the fielder who took the most spectacular catch or even the most catches in the showpiece event.
But former St George’s stalwart, Dennis Wainwright, has told the Bermuda Sun sportsmanship and all-round fielding performance will be taken into account this year.
The record-breaking wicketkeeper, in charge of the presentation of the award, said: “I have been really upset by some of the behaviour I have seen on the field in recent times and the lack of sportsmanship being shown between the players.
“It sets a bad example to people, especially children, who are watching the game. That is why this year we have decided to incorporate sportsmanship as part of the judging process as well as all round fielding ability.”
The Award has been sponsored by the Bermuda Healthcare Centre. The recipient receives the Calvin ‘Bummy’ Symonds trophy, $1,000 and $1,000 worth of travel vouchers.
