Blue and Blue believe youth will take the Cup
Charlie Marshall knows what it takes to win. The St George’s Cup Match legend stepped up as chairman of selectors for the eastenders. Marshall said the selection of four colts signals the club’s intent on thinking for the long-term. He spoke with Don Burgess about St George’s squad for 2013.

Oronde brings a lot of energy and a lot of knowledge to the captain’s role. He took sick last year but he was still involved.
He is a very solid and patient batsman. He comes from a solid cricketing family and that helps.

He is one of Bermuda’s best spin bowlers. There is no pressure on him as our only spinner as he loves to bowl, especially if he’s getting wickets — his energy level increases. He’s also a very solid batsman and a very good fielder. He’s just an excellent all-rounder.
Lionel Cann, 40

Lionel is one of Bermuda’s finest all-rounders in this decade. It shouldn’t be a problem for Lionel to finally get 1,000 runs. he’ll be patient enough to get knowing he needs just one run. The role this year is just be patient because we have a lot of youngsters in the team and he’s like the grandfather and they look up to him. He has to set the example as the senior player.
Allan Douglas Jr, 26

He brings a lot of energy to the game. He’s one of the finest fielders in Bermuda. If he settles down, he can be a great batsman. He just needs to be mature about his innings when he goes to the wicket.
He’s very talented when he comes to his batting, he just has to be very selective as to which balls he decides to play. He has all the shots and an excellent batsman to watch. Once he settles down, he can deliver the goods.

Justin is fit and ready to go. He’s had a great season. He has a great knowledge about the game. He’s like Allan, once he gets started, he can be an excellent batsman, but he has to show maturity on the day. He brings a lot of passion to his bowling. If he was allowed to bowl at both ends, he would do it. he doesn’t like being on the field doing nothing. He wants to stay involved and the ball in his hand.
Treadie Gibbons, 27
Left-hand bat

He is a very explosive batsman - we have a lot of those at St George’s — It’s guaranteed he can give us 50 to 100 runs when he settles down. He will be an opening batsman for us. We’ve been drilling into his head he needs to be very selective on every delivery that comes his way. If he gets excited and tries to hit everything outside instead of being patient and waiting for the bad ball. If he settles down, he can do some great things for St George’s on Thursday and Friday.

We’re excited to have OJ back in the squad. He’s been one of the solid batsmen St George’s over the recent years. He always does well in Cup Match. Because OJ is one of our main batsmen we’re looking for him to build partnerships around the rest of the order. His responsibility as a batsman is very important and we’re expecting some great things from him.
Onias Bascome, 19

CUP MATCH STATS

Onias may be young but he’s another one who is a very exciting batsman when he gets started. He is a great fielder and a great bowler as well. He’s had a great season. Onias is going to get assistance from his brother Oronde but his daddy (Herbie) will also be there as head coach so he’ll be well-protected as a colt during what would normally be a nervous period.
Christian Burgess, 19
Left-hand bat
Wicket keeper
CUP MATCH STATS
Colt
Christian likes to wicket keep. He brings a lot of energy to our squad. He is an explosive opening batsman and one of Bermuda’s finest opening batsmen having represented Bermuda’s Under-19s. he has been a great wicket keeper from day one. We had a long debate about the wicket keeper on the night of the selection and we decided to think long term. We have to start to rebuild the team now because it’s better to do it when we are home rather than at Somerset next year.
Zeko Burgess, 18
Right-hand bat
Right-arm medium fast
CUP MATCH STATS
Colt
He’s one of Bermuda’s finest young bowlers. He has a tremendous amount of pace and direction. he is very enthusiastic about the game and at a young age has a lot of knowledge about the game. St George’s is looking for some great things from him, not only for this year but in the years to come. Zeko deserves to play for St George’s because he’s had a great season.
Lateef Trott, 18
Right-hand bat
Right-arm medium fast
CUP MATCH STATS
Colt
Lateef has had a great season under him, not only in the trial matches but for his club team as well. This was finally his year. He’s been a reserve for several years trying to make Cup Match for some time — the past four years. He has worked hard and he deserved to make the team. He made it easy to pick him.
