Phil Mickelson is in line for his first appearance at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda this October after winning the Open Championship at Muirfield on Sunday.

He carded a superb final-round 66 to win by three shots from Henrik Stenson and collect the fifth Major of his career and his maiden Open triumph.

“It’s one of the best rounds of golf I’ve ever played,” Mickelson said, after getting his hands on the famous Claret Jug.

Mickelson qualified for the Grand Slam in Bermuda in 2010 with his Masters victory but declined the invitation.  The American, 43, did, though, win the season-ending tournament in 2004 when it was played in Hawai’i.

This year, if he accepts the invitation, he will join Adam Scott (Masters), Justin Rose (US Open), and the winner of the upcoming PGA Championship in August, for the two-round tournament on the island.

The Grand Slam of Golf, played at Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda will take place from October 14 to 16, and will be broadcast to a worldwide audience by Turner Sports on TNT.

“At the age of 43, Phil Mickelson may be playing the best golf of his life,” said David Charles, Senior Director of Championships for the PGA of America, in a press release. “And now he’ll have the chance to compete head-to-head against some of the most promising young golfers on tour in Adam Scott and Justin Rose.”

Andy Burrows, Grand Slam Chairman, said: “We have a Hall of Famer and two potential Hall of Famers already qualified for the Grand Slam and we still have one more to be determined. It’s shaping up to be an exciting year for me, the army of volunteers and golf fans who come to experience this tournament in beautiful Bermuda.”

The Grand Slam of Golf event is hosted by The Bermuda Department of Tourism, Port Royal and the Fairmont Southampton.
