Bascome warns Bermuda against final complacency
The Bermuda coach saw his second-string line-up demolish hapless Froya 8-0 on Wednesday evening at the National Sports Centre as he rested the majority of his first XI.
While the Norwegians battled gamely, the game in truth was little more than a training exercise for the host island as hat-tricks from Lejaun Simmons and Angelo Simmons, and strikes from Rai Simons and Marco Warren made light work of their outclassed opponents.
With Greenland hammering Falkland Island 9-0 in the earlier match, the final group standings saw Bermuda top the group courtesy of their 3-0 win over Greenland, with Falkland in third and Froya bottom.
Despite their goal feasts — Bermuda also beat Falkland 8-0 — Bascome warned his side they must be on their game if they want to record a second win against a team that hammered Falklands 9-0 and Froya 12-0.
He told the Bermuda Sun: “It’s going to be a tough game. Greenland are organized and very disciplined — it’s not going to be a walkover.
“They keep the ball well in possession and their movement off the ball is good, the full-backs look to get involved, the central midfielders are creative. We just have top match them in all departments.
“We can’t be complacent. When you beat a team once they will be motivated to come back and knock you down. We can’t get distracted and listen to the other results because Greenland have another chance to put the record straight. They will be motivated so we will have to be just as motivated.”
While attention turned immediately to the final, Bascome was also full of praise for the players who stepped up against Froya.
He added: “I was pleased – it gave us a chance to play most some players who have not had much playing time and it gave me a chance to rest some of the players that have played back to back games.”
