Bermuda win second relay gold (update 4)

“Tonight was phenomenal!”

That’s the way national swim team coach ben Smith described Bermuda’s historic night at the National Aquatics Centre.

Bermuda won two silver and three bronze but it was capped off by a gold medal winning performance in the women's 4 x 50m medley, smashing the national record and Island Games record in the process.
Maddie Moore, Rebecca Heyliger, Lisa Blackburn and Ashley Yearwood were on form once again, just as they were when winning the 4 x 50m freestyle the previous night.
This time, they had to come from behind on the final leg, with Yearwood going through the gears to pass the Isle of Man and see Bermuda home in a time of 1min 58.15.

Smith said: “It was an amazing finish with the relay, shattering the record. They really put together a great swim between those four ladies. This was special when you know how much work these swimmers put into getting to this point — the hours of training leading to that kind of performance — was really special.
The hosts had made a superb start to the evening's swimming session — with a silver and a bronze in the women's 100m backstroke.
Rebecca Sharpe claimed second place in a time of 1min 03.57, while Yearwood picked up a bronze, clocking 1:03.63. 
It was Sharpe's first medal of the Games. 

She said: “It was a great race because… with my family and friends here, the adrenaline was insane, really insane.”
Sharpe added: "Having considered retirement in february the prospect in my home country for my country kept me going this summer. Having that home field advantage gives me that extra boost to accomplish new best times considering the circumstances."
Bermuda's Lisa Blackburn was also in the medals again, winning her third bronze. This time she finished third in the 200m breaststroke in a time of 2:36.76.
In the 50m butterfly, Heyliger won silver in a time of 28.92, while Ashley Yearwood claimed bronze in 29.20.

Heyliger said: “This feels great. There’s no better crowd than your home and it’s always the best place to win some medals because you always feel the support and you know that people are proud of you.”

Yearwood added: “It felt really, really good. I couldn’t be happier right now.”

Yearwood set a new personal best in the fly with her time.
