Bascome to 'bring harmony' to St George's

Oronde Bascome has drawn a line under St George’s Cup Match humiliation last year and said his aim is to "bring harmony" to the team.

Bascome was this week confirmed, as expected, as the team’s captain for the two-day showpiece game against Somerset on August 1.

While the holders quietly  go about their preparation, early focus has been trained on how St George’s are going to claim back the Cup, with up to five trial matches planned.

Bascome missed last year’s defeat — Somerset’s first in 10 years — as he recovered from a burst appendix, with Lionel Cann stepping in as skipper.

He told the Bermuda Sun: “To be honest I’m just looking to bring harmony to the team.

“To get the Cup back we have to have good personnel and a good vibe, so I’m going to focus on bringing some togetherness to the team.

“I can’t really comment on last year, I don’t know what went on. All I can do is say what I want to bring to the team.”

Bascome will serve on the selection panel and has vowed to have a big say
in who he leads out on to the field for the home fixture.

He said: “I will have a big say in who will be playing definitely.

“All the selectors will have an equal say but I believe they’ll want to pick my brains on who I think should play — after all, I will be the one out on the field. Obviously we have to get 20 wickets so we have to pick our team around that. That’s the main focus.”

He added: “I’m really, really happy to be back for Cup Match.

“I know what it means to the people of the country and the people of St George’s, particular.”
