MONDAY, JUNE 11: On Friday Minister of Health Zane De Silva congratulated the students who participated in the recent FutureCare Debate and awarded them each a personal donation towards their upcoming trip to the 2012 PanAmerican Debate Competition in Chile.

The Health Insurance Department hosted The FutureCare Debate on May 23, 2012 at the Heritage Worship Center where the student debaters tackled the motion: “This House believes that FutureCare is good enough.”

Debate speeches were up to eight minutes in length and were modelled from the Worlds’ School debating style.

The debate presented a unique opportunity that widened the students’ perspective of issues of national and strategic importance, and also served as a tune-up for the PanAmerican Debate Competition next month.

The four student debaters featured were:

  • Marcus Bean of Cedarbridge Academy
  • William Campbell of Saltus Grammar School
  • Glen Simmons of the Berkeley Institute
  • Jashonae Smith of Mount Saint Agnes

Additionally, Megan Sutcliff of Bermuda High School participated as the ‘Speaker of the House’.  All students are members of Dynamic Debaters and Learners under the tutelage of Mr. Gladstone Thompson.

The FutureCare debate was one aspect of a communications campaign by the Health Insurance Department to increase awareness of the Health Insurance Plan (HIP) and the FutureCare Plan.  The debate was filmed and the footage will be available for viewing through HID’s website in the next few days.
