World Cup squad trimmed to 19

Left-arm spinner Hasan Durham was the only high profile casualty as Bermuda trimmed its World Cup squad to 19.

The selectors have delayed naming the final 15, which will not now be announced until February next year.

Coach Gus Logie said he wanted to give his players every chance to prove their form, fitness and commitment before deciding on the final places.

He said certain players would be given the opportunity to lose weight or to improve their fitness and show they deserved to be part of the team.

"Everybody talks about the weight of the players. At this point in time if somebody needs to move from point A to point B in that area then they have still got time to do that."

He confirmed Irving Romaine as captain and Dean Minors as vice-captain.

And he suggested there were around four places up for grabs in the final squad.

Azeem Pitcher, Arthur Pitcher jnr, OJ Pitcher and Delyone Borden were all added to the 16 which toured Africa, with only Durham missing out.

Logie explained that the inclusion of Delyone Borden in the squad had 'made it difficult' for Durham and fresh questions raised about the legitimacy of his action during the tour of Africa appear to have sealed his fate.

Logie also addressed recent criticisms that the side had not done enough to blood youngsters, saying that he had opened the door to the most talented young players on the island.

Those that had shown the right attitude and had turned up to training had been given opportunities in the first-team.

As if to underscore the point eight players aged 25 or under were included in the 19-man squad.

In the main, though, Logie stood by the players that have served him well all along.

He added that many of those who were spoken of as being better or more talented than the 19 named today had not committed to the programme and the time had come to 'close the door'.

"We have bent over backwards for them. I always thought that qualification for the World Cup was something that everyone wanted and once we qualified I thought there would be a rush to come in, but it didn't happen.

"Whether you think it's loyalty or not, we are relying on a few committed players.

"Bermuda has had some very encouraging performances over the last two years. We have image issues. The players are big they may be a little bit slow but they have shown some heart in the tournaments they have played in so far.

"We are dealing with a few committed individuals and those are the individuals that need to be given the chance."
