Women can empower themselves the L'GIT way

A weekly ‘share and grow’ session has been launched to promote female empowerment.

The L’GIT Empowerment Institute has organized the weekly session after the success of an initial conference last month.

More than 50 women attended, some to discuss ways of changing their behaviour and making better life choices.

Strengths

Others expressed the difficulties they have in getting on with others.

The youngest attendee was 18-years-old and the oldest was 75.

The conference included team activities, where women were encouraged to define their strengths and weaknesses, and reflect on what could be holding them back.

The teams also had an anonymous quiz to determine their ‘together factor’ — the scores were tallied and the winning team received gifts.

The session ended with a fun but real-life skit, performed by the Hasana Productions theatre company.

Team captains summed up their feelings about the day, with several in tears at the end due to the emotional experience.

Many women vowed to stay involved with L’GIT and bring friends to the next conference.

Organizer Patrice Hayward said: “Our aim is to accomplish (empowerment) by networking with those who share our vision in the development of  ‘diamonds in the rough’.

“During these sessions we will discuss issues in our ongoing effort to get it together and hopefully, together, we can come up with solutions for growth and in some cases, healing.

“We pride ourselves on providing a ‘safe environment’ at these sessions so attendees don’t have to speak if they don’t want to — they might be able to find solutions in just listening.

Concerns

“They can also feel free to submit issues or concerns or ‘what’s buggin’ you’ cards in writing and we will address them.”

L’GIT stands for Ladies Get It Together and each session will present new issues for discussion.

The ‘Share and Grow’ sessions will take place every Thursday, at Christ Church, Devonshire, from 7pm to 9pm.

Registration is needed before each session.

The cost per session is $20 including refreshments.

Premier Paula Cox will be the keynote speaker at a Women’s Empowerment Conference next weekend.

There will also be workshops at the event, on Saturday, March 26, at the Fairmont Southampton Resort.

The conference has been organized by the Family Intimacy Centre (FIC), the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Centre and the Women’s Resource Centre (WRC).
