Will Daniels muster the determination to win the Dixie?

I was off the island for the conclusion of the Gosling’s Invitational but, by all accounts, it was an exciting finish to what was a very successful event.

From what I’ve heard, it  would have made for great television.

Congratulations go out to Gosling’s, Alex Maderios and the participants for making it so.

I gather there was a three-man play-off that required three extra holes before a winner was declared.

I also gather that Bermuda’s very own Terrence Daniels came very close to making it a four-man play-off.

From what I’ve read, his approach shot to the last, where he needed a birdie to tie, hit the pin, however, he missed the resulting putt, although I do not know from how far away.

It’s a pity that none of our events are televised but maybe one day the Bermuda Open might find its way onto television.

It would require an investment by Government but exciting finishes such as what happened at the Gosling’s, plus the beauty of Bermuda, tend to be a great formula for attracting television audiences.

Unassuming

Terrence Daniels continues to show that he is quite probably the best golfer in Bermuda.

He recently graduated from university and, for the past four years, was not able to participate in the local golfing scene as much as others could.

For that reason, many local golfers may not have been aware of Terrence Daniels, an unassuming young man who does not seem to feel the need to blow his own horn.

I understand that Terrence built quite an impressive golf resume while at university.

Certainly this past year he has shown that he has a lot of talent.

He reached the final stage of the U.S. Amateur, won the Bermuda Amateur Stroke Play, and came within a cat’s whisker of winning the Gosling’s.

That Terrence has talent in a Bermuda context is not in question, however, whether he has it in the bigger world is what really matters.

By virtue of winning the Bermuda Amateur Stroke Play Championship, Terrence earned an automatic exemption into the Dixie Amateur in Florida, which will be played December 18-21.

Prestigious

Bermuda’s women’s champion, Katrin Burnie, will be competing in the women’s division, January 1-3.

The Dixie Amateur is a prestigious event, attracting very strong fields, including top players from several countries around the world.

Terrence and Katrin will have their hands full and it will be interesting to see how they both fare.

Making the cut would be good. However, I have a feeling that Terrence is capable of achieving somewhat more than that.

Doing well in events such as the Dixie Amateur is not easy.

It requires something in addition to raw talent, something that comes from within.

After all, many can play this game but only a few can actually get things done.
