FRIDAY, NOV. 2: It used to be, that you did not start in golf until you are around 12 years old. The courses are long and kids any younger would not simply be able to handle the physical requirements for golf.
Picking up heavy clubs not designed for kids and then walking four miles was simply not an option.
Things have changed since I was a kid.
They now have special lightweight clubs that allow even the smallest child to enjoy the game.
At Tucker’s Point we have introduced a new system for kids to get into golf no matter how young they are.
Stage one is the ‘active start’, where basic movements that are required of all sports are introduced allowing a solid foundation on which to move to other levels, this can be as simple as smashing bubbles with a bat or hopping and skipping. Typically, this is a programme for ages 3-5.
Stage two is the FUNdamentals programme, this is based on complex movement skills such as stability, object control and awareness. More structured activities and golf specific movements are introduced at this stage.
Finally, we take them to learn to play, which masters the previous FUNdamental programme, and now focuses on sports transferable skills. Different sports such as baseball are used to help hand eye co-ordination and sports movements.
There is no guarantee your child will grow up to be another Tiger, but golf is certainly a game for a lifetime. Plus, there are not many other sporting activities where parents and children can spend so much quality time together in an outdoor setting.
The Tucker’s Point golf professional team teach all ages and abilities but Jack Bridges is the lead instructor for this new system of coaching younger kids, where before there was traditionally no programme. If you are interested in learning more about this innovative concept, please contact Jack directly [email protected].
Paul Adams is the PGA director of golf at Rosewood Tucker’s Point.
