Art shows

In Full Bloom

May 5 — The latest Artist in the Gardens, Johanna Flath, presents a show of her recent watercolours In Full Bloom in the Rose Garden Gallery. The opening reception takes place on May 5 from 5:30–7pm and the show runs until May 18. Johanna has been inspired by the fashion shows of Bermuda’s bygone days when the ladies of various clubs held these events and wore hats made of natural and floral materials.

The Art of the Rose

May 5 — Fresh roses will abound during a special show in the Arrowroot Room as well as the sale of watercolours of roses, entitled The Art of the Rose on May 5 from 5:30-7 pm. This is a chance to buy a beautiful painting to benefit Masterworks and the Rose Society at the same time.

Heritage Bermuda

Until May 28 — There will be an opening of a new show from 6-7:30pm with works by Christopher Grimes, Bruce Stuart, Vaughan Evans, Deirdre Furtado, Christopher Marson and Milton Hill Sr. at the Lighthouse Tearoom. A preview is available at www.bermudashowcase.com

Bacardi Limited Biennial 2006 Exhibition of Contemporary Bermuda Art in Association with Island Construction Ltd.

Until September 1 — 83 works by 50 local artists were chosen by the distinguished international jurors for the 2006 Biennial. The jurors are Dr. Annette Blaugrund, Director, National Academy Museum and School of Fine Art, New York; and Professor Moe Brooker, former professor at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Presently he is Department Head of Basic Studies at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia where he also teaches painting.

The Photographic Show

Until May 18 — Open at the Bermuda Society of Arts is The Photographic Show in the Onions Gallery. In the Edinburgh Gallery is a show by the Centre for Talented Students. The shows run until May 18. Third Floor, City Hall. 292-3824

Members’ Open

Until May 26 — Opening at the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard is Series II, by Kok Wan Lee and friends. The show runs until May 26. The BACD is open Monday to Sunday 10am- 5pm. Call 234-2809.

Garden Club Open Houses & Gardens 2006

Admission is $25 for Adults, Season ticket is $80 and tickets will be on sale at the houses. All open houses take place from 1pm-4pm rain or shine.

Bermuda National Gallery Bermuda Film Night

May 9 — The BNG will present Rare Bird, Special Mention in the Documentary category in the Bermuda International Film Festival, ‘The true story of a boy who helped find an extinct bird’ the story of David Wingate and the cahow. Lucinda Spurling, Director. There will be a 5:30 reception for 6pm lecture, which takes place at the Bermuda National Gallery in City Hall. Tickets are $15 for non-members, members, $10.

Lecture Series 2005/6, Lecture 5

May 18 — PartnerRe and the BNG present The Body in Art a lecture by Ori Z. Soltes, Goldman Professorial Lecturer in Fine Arts and Theology at Georgetown University. What related and diverse goals do artists have in depicting the human body and its cognates in animal, plant and architectural depiction and how does this relate to what art is all about? There will be a 5:30 reception for 6pm lecture, which takes place at the Bermuda National Gallery in City Hall. Tickets are $15 for non-members, members, $5.

BNG Lunchtime Video Presentation

May 10 — Bermuda History Series (Panatel) featuring Episode 1: The Story Begins: 1503-1684 and Episode 2: Sea, Salt and Slavery: 1684-1834. The presentation takes place from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm. Admission is $5.00, Members: Free and the presentation takes place at the Bermuda National Gallery in City Hall.

Lecture Presentation

May 17 — This lecture will feature Bermuda's Gombey Tradition, a powerpoint presentation by Irwin Trott, Leader of the Warwick Gombeys with an introduction by Gary Phillips. Mr. Trott will also bring examples of traditional costumes, hats, hatchets and bows. The presentation takes place from 12:30–1:30pm. Admission is $5, Members: Free and the presentation takes place at the Bermuda National Gallery in City Hall.

La Leche League

Meeting

May 13 — La Leche League of Bermuda will be holding a support group meeting, Human Milk: the superior infant food, open to pregnant women and mothers at 10:30am at the First Floor Conference Room at King Edward Memorial Hospital. An accredited La Leche Leader will be present to answer questions and address concerns. Light refreshments will be served. Call 236-1120 for further information.

One Love Concert

May 6 — Kalonji Records And Spanish Town Entertainment present the first in the Bermuda One Love Concert Series 2006 featuring Sizzla, Joseph Shepherd, Ninja Cutty, Corvin Melody, Ras Giorgis, Loc Tight, Fires Of Africa and all acts will be backed by the live band Step By Step. There will be a warm up juggle by King Tafari and Souljah1. It all takes place under The Mega Tent at Clearwater Beach, St. Davids. Tickets Are $40 in advance and $50 at the gate and are available at Eru-Atile on Court Street, Logic on Burnaby or Spanish Town Entertainment on King Street.

Mediterraneo Bistro

May 6 — Live Music at Mediterraneo Bistro, on the corner of Church & Parliament Streets, in Hamilton. Downbeat is at 10pm with music until 1am. Appearing will be James Richardson, piano, Rob Lansing guitar, Stan Gilbert bass, Howard Rego drums and surprise guest artists, playing straight ahead jazz, Latin, popular and contemporary jazz and a fusion of all the above, with food served until 1am. The Reggae Oldies Train

May 5 — All aboard and get ready to ride the Reggae Oldies Train with your conductors Jugglin J and J Radigun. Get on board at The St. David's Cricket Club. Fare is $10 before midnight and $15 after. Train departs 10pm.

Gas Dem N Light Dem

May 7 — Ruff Ryderz Promotions presents Gas Dem N Light Dem featuring a three-way clash featuring O.G.S. Genesis VS Supatone VS Hollywood at Horseshoe Bay Beach. Hosted by Vybez Alliance. The winner will receive $1,000 and there will be free DVD/CD giveaways. Admission is $20.

Mexican Night

May 13 — Support Bermuda Riding for the disabled by attending the Mexican Night in the riding ring of the Equestrian Centre. There will be dinner, dancing to ‘The Travellers’ an auction and raffles. The cocktails and a margarita bar will begin at 7pm, followed by dinner and dancing at 8pm. Dress is denim or Mexican and tickets are $150 per person. May 23 — Volcanic Productions & Tuff Dogs Sports Club present, the ‘Pre-Bermuda Day Park Party’ at Barr’s Bay Park from 7pm-2am. Celebrate the beginning of Summer. Fundraiser Cruise

May 27 — Come onboard The MV Destiny, leaving from Albuoy's Point, Hamilton. Boarding begins at 6:30pm and the boat departs promptly at 7pm, returning at 10pm. The Beauty Queen of Leenane

May 15-20 — The Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society presents The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh. The play is set in a country cottage in Leenane, a small town in Connemara, County Galway, Ireland, The Beauty Queen of Leenane is a black comedy portraying ancient, manipulative Mag and her virginal daughter, Maureen, whose mutual loathing may be more durable than any love.
