What will be your tipple of choice this Christmas?
TUESDAY, DEC. 13: A Christmas dinner wouldn’t be complete with a table filled only with food.
In some houses, it wouldn’t be complete without bottles and bottles of champagne and wine.
Simon Carruthers of Gosling's has recommended a variety of wines at various price points to please just about any palate.
“Sometimes people buy the same things every Christmas.
“They stick to what they know. Knowing what people normally have, obviously a main staple is champagne. We have Veuve Clicquot and the other one I like is the Refolo.
“It’s not made using the same method but it’s inexpensive and it’s a great substitute for those who don’t want to spend $50 for a bottle.”
Veuve Clicquot retails for $57.75 a bottle and Cesari Refolo is $15 a bottle.
As for the white wines, Carruthers recommends Eroica Riesling, the Rombauer Chardonnay and Eidosela Albarino, which is new to the island.
The wines retail for $27.50, $40 and $18.75 respectively.
Moving on to the red wines, Carruthers said: “You can have Pinot Noir with your turkey and cranberry sauce for Christmas.
“We have got the Zinfandel from Rombauer that has 15 percent alcohol.
“You could have it with a man course or with cheese, chocolates and desserts.”For Pinot Noir he suggested a $23 bottle from Byron Santa Barbara. Carruthers also suggested an Avalon California Cabernet Sauvignon for $16.50.
The Zinfandel retails for $37 a bottle. “The main thing is look at the flavour profiles of the wines”, he added.
And for something for after dinner, he recommended Warre’s Quinta de Cavadinha for $52 a bottle and Dow 10yr Tawny Port for $36 a bottle.
All these wines are available at Goslings Wine Store on Dundonald Street.
And even if you aren’t a big drinker, there’s bound to be someone on your Christmas list would appreciate a nice bottle of wine or champagne.
