Like Oprah, we all have a few things that we know for sure.
Here are a few of the golf things that I know for sure and I hope that you will agree with them.
I know for sure that all of you who love golf should reserve the date of September 25 so that you can attend the 60th anniversary dinner of the Bermuda Golf Association.
Alan Gamble, vice-president of the BGA, is working hard to provide a great evening of fun for all, including a trick shot artist who will leave you scratching your head in wonder.
There will also be an auction that will include several interesting items, such as a 2010 St. Andrew’s flag signed by Jack Nicklaus and a round of golf for four at Wentworth, complete with caddies.
I understand that there will be a museum of sorts to walk through with many artifacts on display, including some old Bermuda golfing photographs. I’ve seen some of them and I’m sure they will bring smiles to all who see them.
I know for sure that Bermuda golf owes a huge debt of gratitude to the Parker family for their many years of service on behalf of golf in Bermuda. Muriel Parker, in particular, was committed to developing golf in Bermuda and was instrumental in building the Bermuda Goodwill, an event that has brought hundreds of golfing tourists to Bermuda.
Muriel built a network of golfing contacts throughout the U.S. and U.K. that served to bring good overseas players to Bermuda to play in our events and that built good relationships with key people in the R&A.
There is no doubt in my mind that there would be no Bermuda Golf Association today without the Parker family and that golf in Bermuda has benefited greatly from their efforts.
Similarly, I know for sure that the BGA also owes a huge debt of gratitude to all the volunteers who have come out over the years to assist in running the various BGA events.
It is not possible to run a golf event without volunteers and I know that their willingness to come out and help is greatly appreciated.
The need for volunteers is ever present at each and every event.
I know for sure that Scott Roy, along with the current BGA Board, is working hard to restore Bermuda golf to the stature it enjoyed under the Parker family.
We all know that Bermuda golf has struggled over the past few years and I’m glad to report that several members of the golfing community have provided positive feedback about the good work that Scott is doing in running events and in getting information out to the golfing public.
Finally, I also know for sure that the East will beat the West in the upcoming Romay Trophy and that the 12 Amateurs will whoop the 12 Professionals in the upcoming Bermuda Cup. And that, surely, is something we already all know for sure.
