Former West Indies middle-order batsman Larry Gomes is among a cadre of Trinidadian cricket greats, passing on their expertise to Bermuda's World Cup hopefuls at their training camp in Couva.

The camp, which began yesterday morning with a 6am fitness session, will also see the likes of pace bowler Tony Gray, swing-bowling all-rounder Bernard Julien and left-arm spinner Raphick Jumadeen work with Bermuda's players.

Gomes, an elegant accumulator of runs amid a plethora of destructive batting talents in the great West Indies side of the eighties, worked out with the batsmen in the nets yesterday.

And the left-hander, now 53, will be keeping a watchful eye over the likes of Irving Romaine, Janeiro Tucker and Clay Smith today in a 40-over practice match against Trinidadian club side W-Connection Wanderers.

Gray, a typical gangly West Indian pace-bowler whose Test career was limited to five games despite an impressive record at the top level, and left-arm swing exponent Julien will be spending some time educating the bowlers in the mental and physical rigours of the game.

Jumadeen, a left-arm orthodox slow bowler, acclaimed for his accuracy and economy, rather than his attacking instincts, will work with spinners Dwayne Leverock and Delyone Borden.

Bermuda coach Gus Logie said the training camp was a big chance for the players to learn from the likes of Gomes, who had proved themselves at the very highest level.

"Larry is there to help with the technical areas and give feedback on cricket specifics and let them know the demands of playing at the top level.

"He's Trinidadian, he knows the conditions, he knows what is required mentally to succeed.

"We also have Tony Gray, Bernard Julien and Raphick Jumadeen to work with the bowlers.

"It's a chance for all of them to make the most of this opportunity to learn from these guys.

"They have a wealth of experience to pass on. We will be getting information from everyone."

Middle-order batsman Lionel Cann said yesterday that it had been useful to work with Gomes, who he said had analysed all the batsmen and given them pointers on how to improve.

The players were taking a break yesterday evening to support Bermuda's football team in their Digicel Cup clash with Haiti at the nearby Ato Bolden Stadium.

A 50-over clash with Clark Road United follows tomorrow's game against Wanderers, before a rest-day on Friday and a weekend of analysis and further coaching sessions.[[In-content Ad]]
