Hurricane Igor is already making his presence felt on the island, causing havoc with the weekend events calendar.

Numerous events have been cancelled or postponed over the coming weekend to ensure members of the public are kept safe from the impending storm.

While the front page of Scene is usually dedicated to telling you about what’s on in Bermuda, this week it will be telling you what’s not.

Jeffrey Osbourn in concert

Where: Fairmont Southampton Resort
Old date: Saturday, September 18
Status: Postponed until Friday, October 29.
International R&B singer Jeffrey Osbourn was due to play at the Fairmont Southampton on Friday night but the concert has now been postponed until next month.

The singer, known for such hits as On the Wings of Love and Stay With Me Tonight, will now perform on Friday, September 29. There are still tickets available for $100 from 27th Century Boutique or by calling 504-7521. For more information on the concert organized by the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Bermuda Alumni Chapter, call Anthony Hunter on 504-7521.

Yoga Beach Party

Where: Horseshoe Bay
Old date: Saturday, September 18
Status: Postponed
New date: Saturday, September 25.

The Yoga Beach Party was due to take place at Horseshoe Bay as part of a global yoga day. Unfortunately Bermuda will be mediating alone a week late thanks to Igor.

Yoga instructor Peter Rehmer said: “We staged the same event three years ago — it was very popular. It was a close call then —  the event was scheduled for 5pm and at noon it was pouring in town. The clouds were dark and it looked like it was going to be sucked in but out at Horseshoe, by 4pm, the clouds cleared up and it was beautiful.

“Everybody is welcome to come to the event including non-practising members.”

Keep Bermuda Beautiful’s Marine Clean Up

Old date: Saturday, September 18
Status: Postponed
New date: Saturday, September 25.

The ocean will have to wait a little longer for its annual spruce up as Keep Bermuda Beautiful’s annual Marine Clean Up has been postponed. The clean up planned for this Saturday will now take place on Saturday, September 25.

A KBB spokesperson said: “We feel that with the approaching storm there will be extreme high tides and storm surge even as early as Saturday. By moving the clean up event to the following Saturday, KBB’s volunteers will be more helpful to the Island as they tackle the post-storm debris”.

Anyone interested in helping with the marine clean up on Saturday, September 25 after Igor passes Bermuda should contact KBB on 295-5142 or e-mail [email protected]  www.kbb.bm

Family Festival

Old date: Sunday, September 19
Status: Cancelled
Rain date: n/a.

The Family Festival, organized by the City of Hamilton, has been thwarted yet again by bad weather. It was originally supposed to have taken place on August 29 but that was postponed and rescheduled for this weekend. Igor has now forced organizers to cancel the event for good.

Bermuda Docs Weekend Film Series

Old date: Sunday, September 19
Status: Postponed
New date: Sunday, September 26.

Igor certainly put a damper on the launch of Bermuda Docs’ and BUEI’s new Weekend Film Series this Sunday. The event has been postponed until next Sunday.

The gentle Italian comedy Mid-August Lunch and the award-winning documentary film The Oath, will screen at the BUEI at 3pm and 4.30pm respectively. Tickets already purchased for the screenings will be honoured on the new date.

Future dates for the Weekend Film Series include November 21, January 16 and February 20. The series will take a break in October for the presentation of Bermuda Docs, to be held October 22-24 at the BUEI. Tickets to each film, $15, are on sale now in the gift shop at the BUEI. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Bermuda Docs is on Facebook, where filmgoers can find trailers of the two films.
