Wavell who? Bermuda has no fear of Jamaicans

"We're looking to make a name for ourselves" says Bermuda cricket captain Irving Romaine.

Many in the Caribbean will dismiss Bermuda's chances against Jamaica on Friday in the 20-20 Cricket Tournament.

After all, the Jamaicans boost the mighty Wavell Hinds among other big names, but that doesn't faze the Bermuda team says Romaine.

"We'll have to face bigger names in the World Cup," he said. "No one is going to be star struck. We're looking to make names for ourselves."

Romaine said Bermuda has plenty of experience in the 20-20 game and that will be a big advantage.

"We know it's not a free hitting game. There is a definite strategy involved."

Having played in the 20-20 World Cricket Classic earlier this year, Bermuda was able to help hone a strategy that is a winner.

"Our strength will be our team unity," says Romaine. He added that early on the squad could count on himself, Lionel Cann, Dwayne 'Sluggo' Leverock and wicketkeeper Dean Minors to be cheering the team on, but now it's a total squad effort.

Romaine said they'll designate one player to help keep everyone positive for two overs before picking someone else, "but everyone is chirping in.

"We have the ability and we believe we can win," he said.

Romaine added that while payments like $25,000 for being Man of the Match and $10,000 for Player of the Match are incentives, it will not break up the national team's unity.

Don't expect someone to start playing shots and being a glory hog because they have a fat paycheque awaiting them at the end of the game.

"We've already decided amongst ourselves that if someone wins Man of the Match, he'll give $1,000 to every team member and keep the rest for himself."

Early results saw U.S. Virgin Islands set a target of 145 and then bowled out St. Maarten for 98.

Cayman recovered from 29 for 2 (after eight overs) to record 175 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs before limiting the Bahamas for 118 for nine.

St. Lucia limited the British Virgin Islands to 105 for nine and were able to surpass that total in just 14.3 overs.

Dominica chose to bat and collapsed to 83 in their match against Grenada, which was not a very challenging target for the Spice Island.

Nevis bowled out St. Kitts for 100 runs in 19.5 overs and then surpassing that total in 11 overs.

Match results from yesterday's games (St. Vincent v U.S. Virgin Islands and Barbados v Anguilla) were not available at press time.

Bermuda plays Jamaica at 8pm Bermuda time on Friday and the game will be shown live on ZFB channel 7.[[In-content Ad]]
