Vallis and Mansell win Four Ball Championship

Flawless play from Dr. Robert Vallis and Nick Mansell propelled them to the top of the leader board on the first day of the Amateur Four Ball Championship and they never looked back.  Visiting team, Robert Morris and Marty West from Virginia did all they could to catch Vallis and Mansell but came up just short at Port Royal on Sunday.

In the final round it seemed like Vallis and Mansell were destined to win with Nick hitting his first tee shot left into trouble and recovering with a miraculous shot to the green that lead to an opening head shaking birdie.

He then followed that shot up with a 20 foot birdie putt on the third hole.

However, West and Morris plugged away and birdied the fourth and fifth hole to keep up the pace.

It was a steady until the famous 16th hole when both Mansell and Vallis hit their tee shots left out of bounds and Morris on the green 10 feet away in one.

The best Vallis and Mansell could do was double bogey 5 and Morris’s birdie putt just edged the hole and a two shot swing took place with two holes left.

All four players birdied the 17th hole and West’s birdie on 18 was not enough to affect Vallis who eased a three footer in for par and the win.

In the women’s division, the team of Nikki Boyce and Tracy Nash started the final round with a slight lead over Katyna Rabain and Donna Jones.

It was back and forth on the front nine and it looked like Rabain and Jones may be able to pull up and take the lead, but the steady play of Nash and Boyce was just a little too much to overcome.  The par 3’s caused no trouble for both teams as they birdied the tough eighth and 16th holes.

Scott Barnett and Jonathan Dodd took the lead in the net division from their first round 67 (-4) and finished strong with an even better score of 64 (-7) to secure their win with ease.

Carla Mann-O’Callaghan and Joan Wood-Cassidy played steady all three rounds to win the ladies NET division.

They had the lead from the first round and kept pulling away from the pack with each round.
