Janeiro Tucker and Arantxa King were named Bermuda's Athletes of the Year last night.

Tucker was the odds-on favourite for the Male Athlete award after leading Bermuda to a berth in the cricket World Cup in the ICC Trophy qualifiers. Tucker smashed a 132 in the pivotal game that earned Bermuda the right to compete against India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in next year's World Cup.

Tucker had to step in as captain of the ICC squad after Clay Smith couldn't go on because of an injury.

King set several firsts for Bermuda. She became the island's first world youth champion by winning the gold at the IAAF World Youth championships with a leap of 6.39 metres in the long jump.

She also won gold at the Carifta Games with a leap of 5.98 metres and capped off her year with a gold at the Junior Pan Am games. She ended the year ranked 13th on the IAAF World junior List.

Both King and Tucker also won an Achievement Award as did Clay Smith, Lionel Cann, Teresa Perozzi, Latroya Darrell and Jillian Terceira.

Smith was recognized for his 126 not out against Kenya and 138 against Cayman, a Bermuda record in the Inter-Continental Cup.

Cann also won for his cricket exploits. The 2005 Cingular Wireless Most Valuable Player of the Year was also brilliant in international competition with an international average of 34.57 runs.

All Perozzi did was win the North American Boxing Council's world middleweight title after defeating previously undefeated Scroller Carrington of Trinidad. She became the first Bermudian to win a world boxing title.

Darrell won silver medals in the Pan Am Juniors and Carifta in the long jump. She also won the silver in the triple jump at the Carifta Games.

Equestrian rider Terceira had a fine season competing in Europe. She had a first, second and fourth at the three star level and also had a fifth at a two star level event.

Picking up Sports Citation Awards was former track and field star Sonya Smith, AON, Cable and Wireless, former Cup Match legend Edward 'Bosun'Swainson and cricket umpire Roger Dill. Swainson was the first man to score a century in Cup Match.

Winning Special Achievement Awards for their contributions as administrators were Patty Petty for triathlon and Denise Kyme for squash.

The Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club picked up an Appreciation Award for its contributions to the sport of sailing.[[In-content Ad]]
