Tucker honed his skill by bowling at one stump

Cleveland off-spinner looking to break into the national team after U-19 World Cup

Cleveland spinner Tamauri Tucker is targeting a spot in the senior national side after his 'Bowler of the Tournament' performance helped Bermuda's under-19s qualify for the World Cup.

The 18-year-old off-spinner ripped through the Bahamas on day one of last week's America's tournament to set Bermuda on their way to victory with stunning figures of six for nine.

And he played a key role too in Saturday's eliminator against Canada with a miserly spell of 2 for 17 in ten overs to help his team eke out a 13-run win over their arch rivals.

He ended the tournament with ten wickets at a 6.2 average with an economy rate of just over two an over - figures that would have made Muttiah Muralitharan or Shane Warne, who he cites as his favourite cricketers, ecstatic.

" I was very proud to win the award. I didn't think I was going to get it at first. But my performances against Bahamas and Canada did it for me."

Tucker, who believes his confidence and ability to vary the pace are among his greatest attributes, said some of the wickets had favoured his style of bowling.

And he said hours of practice on the training field had paid off with his relentless accuracy keeping the economy rate down.

"In my spare time I go down to Cleveland and practice hitting a single stump."

Tucker, who said getting six for nine against the Bahamas was one of the highlights of his career, now believes he can step it up another level and break into the senior squad.

"That's my aim. This has put me one step further ahead to try and get into the senior team.

"I'll just look to do my best and try to get some more wickets."

Tucker reckons half of the under-19 squad could soon be representing their country at full international level citing Khiry Furbery, Kyle Hodsoll and Jordan DeSilva as players who could follow the likes of Stefan Kelly and Malchi Jones into Gus Logie's squad.

But before they think about senior team duty there is the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia to take care of, "This was a nice tournament for us and I think we can do pretty good in the World Cup. We play well together as a team."[[In-content Ad]]
