Teeing Off
Time to say farewell
Over the years, I’ve done a number of different things in golf but writing a newspaper column hadn’t ever crossed my mind.
I’ve had a lot of fun writing the column, however, this week’s will be my last.
Back in the good old days, the sports pages of Bermuda’s newspapers had good coverage of golf but, like so many other things in the golf world, it died off.
I have no idea why but, what is for sure, it is now almost non-existent.
For that, I say, shame on the so-called sports reporters.
Football and cricket get the most attention, which is understandable, but that doesn’t mean that golf shouldn’t get a regular section in the sports pages of our newspapers.
There is enough happening in golf, or is in the golf pipeline, which an able sports reporter could use to keep the Bermuda golf world informed on a regular basis.
After all, I’ve written something each week for two years and I’m not even a sports reporter.
The trouble, or at least so it seems, is that sports reporters are no longer bothered to report on the so-called minor sports, of which golf is one.
Rarely do any sports reporters from the Bermuda newspapers attend any golf events with an interest in providing a sports report for their newspaper.
The fact of the matter seems to be this — since the daily is the only daily, it can cover what it wants and not cover what it doesn’t want.
The lack of interest in golf shown by newspaper sports reporters in Bermuda is at an all-time low.
Many years ago, there was a weekly golf column written by someone who signed their name as Pin High.
Golf tournaments had extensive coverage complete with photos, interviews and details of key shots by the lead players.
Today, we have sparing coverage at best.
It was this lack of coverage, together with certain specific issues that were taking place in the golf world, which created my interest in writing a golf column.
I approached the Bermuda Sun to see if this paper had any interest in having a weekly golf column and I was pleased when the answer was yes.
During the past two years ago, I have put forward golfing issues that were meaningful to me.
Every now and then I would receive feedback from readers, which was gratifying.
I hope those who read this column found it worth reading.
I’m now off to the 19th hole for golf column writers followed by whither the fates may lead me.
