The Little Mermaid gets a Caribbean twist
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22: Troika will take Bermuda on a journey with its adaptation of Once on This Island, a play with colourful costumes and scenery and a full band.
It is the company’s first musical and the fourth play under the Work in Progress umbrella.
The play starts tomorrow night at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium and is directed by Las Vegas native Steve Huntsman.
Bermuda’s own Eric Bean Jr has choreographed the musical.
Once on This Island is a Broadway musical that is the Caribbean adaptation of the popular film The Little Mermaid.
A press statement said: “In almost non-stop song and dance, the show tells the story of Timoune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthier boy from the other side of her island.
“Once Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical Gods who rule the island guide Timoune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.”
Seldon Woolridge and Shoa Bean are producing the play.
Asked why people should attend the show, Huntsman said: “For generations stories have been passed down to teach valuable lessons about life, love, pain and hope.
“Few do this better than the tale of Timoune, the peasant girl, whose unrequited love takes her on a journey through all of these life experiences and more, ultimately providing hope not only the progeny of the characters in the story, but to all those who take the journey with her.”
Woolridge added: “Unlike many musicals, this is a simple straightforward story.
“This show is far different creatively from anything we have done.
“Audiences will appreciate the beauty of this story and how it is brought to life through creative staging, set, costumes, music, lighting and choreography.”
Organisers say the musical will be performed by some of Bermuda’s finest youth. The statement also explained exactly what Work In Progress is.
“Work In Progress is an annual youth arts project, which sources, nurtures and showcases some of the best local youth performing talent in Bermuda.
“This unique project offers participants the opportunity to work in a professional theatre environment with a professional team, engaging in all elements of drama and performing arts, from auditions, workshops, rehearsals, publicity right through to performances.
“Participants received free instruction and undertook three months of intensive rehearsals and workshops in voice, dance and acting in preparation for the public performances of Work In Progress four.”
The musical will run from tomorrow until Saturday night.
It will begin at 8pm nightly with doors opening at 7:30pm.
