FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4: The male teaching staff at Warwick Academy will look like throwbacks from the ‘70s by the end of this month. No fewer than 14 male members of staff at the school will be growing their facial hair as part of the annual fundraiser Movember in aid of prostate and testicular cancer. Organized by Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, Movember invites men to grow their moustaches thoughout the 30 days of November with the aim of raising awareness of men’s health issues and raising funds to support men’s health programmes in Bermuda.
The Warwick Academy team, named the Mo-sketeers were given a clean shave by hairdressers from Bang Bang Hair on Monday in preparation for the hairy month ahead.
The schools motto has been given a temporary make over as well.
“Quo Non Ascendam” (to what heights can we not rise?) has been unofficially switched to “Quo Mo Ascendum” (to what height can our moustaches rise?)
The school’s deputy principal Andy Fields organized the event at the school and is taking part in the challenge.
He said the team’s raison d’etre was: “to bring testicles and prostates into the limelight as breasts have been out in front for too long”.
Team Mo-sketeers hopes to raise $5,000 for charity — in their third day they had already collected $500.
The full list of those taking part at the school are Dave Horan, Adam Griffiths, Neville Carley, Ralph Woods, Richard Cunningham, Mark Thorne, Eric Totten, Charles Lowery, Chris Stafford, Mark Hamilton, Raj Goonewardene, Nick Shardlow, Andrew Dobson and Andy Fields.
Anyone interested in donating to Team Mo-sketeers or any other local “mo-bros” may do so via www.cancer.bm. Click on the Movember page and view “sponsor someone”. For information on cancer support call 232-2247.
