Talbot tournament is a great opportunity
What may not be so well known in the community is that the RBT Foundation supports an International Junior golf tournament, played in Bermuda in July, which is now in its fourth year. The tournament this year will run from Monday, July 19-22 and will be played at The Mid Ocean Club and Tuckers Point Club.
The main goal of the RBT Junior International Classic is to provide opportunity for local golfers to develop their skills through participation in an international event where they can compete against junior golfers from around the globe without travelling to other destinations.
The Committee that runs this tournament is to be given a huge round of applause as this is exactly what Bermuda golf is in dire need of.
The Department of Tourism will also welcome such work as the tournament may well bring much needed tourists to Bermuda.
A youngster travelling to Bermuda to compete in this event is likely to bring with him mum and dad, and maybe even a sibling or two.
Nothing wrong with that picture, I'm sure.
The International Junior Classic is contested over 54 holes. There are four age groups for boys, two of which play from the back tees and two of which play from the forward tees. Due to low numbers participating, there is only one division for girls.
Juniors are defined as being under 21, which means the event can expect to attract some very good players.
It would be great if a few more girls decide to sign up to play before the first round of the tournament starts on July 20.
Ranked tournament
I have been told by the Tournament Chairman that the event is sanctioned by Junior ranking bodies in the United States, which gives it that added star quality to junior golfers playing the junior golf circuit during their summer holidays. Ranking points are what junior golfers need if they wish to get noticed by those that matter in the golf world.
All of our Bermuda Juniors should be chomping at the bit to play in this event. It is a wonderful opportunity to play against a field that has some quality junior golfers from overseas in it, without having to leave home.
It is an ideal opportunity to meet people and forge friendships that just might last a lifetime. Golf has a wonderful habit of doing that for those who have this game in their heart.
An early list of competitors suggests that we should see some very good golf played from the local entrants.
Cornell Bean Jr, the son of a golf professional and a scratch player in his own right, has entered. Jun Hardart and Alex Osborne are both expected to play as is Damien Palanyandi who recently finished sixth at the Island Games.
The overseas entrants should provide good competition for our local players.
Congratulations to the organizers, thanks to The RBT Foundation and good luck to the competitors.
