St. George's can bat, but can the team bowl out Somerset?

St. George's have taken few risks with their selections this year. With a line-up that bats down to ten, they are not giving up the cup easily.

The middle order is packed with talent while the twin menace of spinners Rodney Trott and Delyone Borden will be the main bowling menace.

Here James Whittaker takes a look at the holders XI.

Lionel Cann, 36

St David's

Right-hand bat, right-arm medium pace

In his final year as skipper of St George's Cann is determined to go out with a win. He scored a century in the final trial game and seems to be peaking at the right time. Cann has developed from the master of the explosive cameo to one of the mainstays of St George's middle order and he will be targeting his first Cup Match hundred this year after agonizingly being out for 99 last time.

Cann should pass 'Bosun' Swainson into fifth all-time for St. George's.

Cup Match stats

Batting: 22 innings, two not outs, 796 runs (8th), 99 high score (last year), 39.80 average (third)

Bowling: 125 overs, one maiden, 460 runs, nine wickets 51.11 average

Oronde Bascome, 21

St George's

Right-hand bat

As the club captain, Bascome was a virtual certainty to come back into the side this year. He hasn't been at his best for the club side this season but is being groomed as a future skipper and many believe he has the potential to play a big innings.

His tidy close fielding could also play a role with Delyone Borden and Rodney Trott expected to bowl a lot of overs.

Cup Match stats

Batting: Three innings, 47 runs, 25 high score, 15.67 average

Rodney Trott, 21

Bailey's Bay

Right-arm off-spin, right hand bat

The flighty, varied off-spin of rising young star Trott adds an extra dimension to St George's bowling attack.

Highly regarded Trott, Bermuda's top wicket taker in South Africa earlier this year, has come along way since he last played the Classic in 2007.

He had a bad day in Saturday's trial match going for 84 off nine overs, but Trott is now firmly established as one of Bermuda's top players and will have a big part to play for the holders.

Cup Match stats

Batting: Three innings, one not out, 35 runs, 17 high score (not out), 17.50 average

Bowling: 31 overs, two maidens, 163 runs, two wickets, 81.50 average

Charlie Marshall, 48

Social Club

Left-hand bat

A Cup Match legend, Marshall, has been the mainstay of St. George's middle order for almost three decades.

Even in, what is generally thought to have been a quiet season by his standards, the left-hander averages a shade over 40 with the bat. Marshall relishes the big occasion and can play whatever role is required for St. George's - whether its doggedly digging them out of a hole or accelerating towards a declaration.

Cup Match stats

Batting: 41 innings, four not out, 1,338 runs (first), 134 high score, 36.16 average (eighth)

Delyone Borden, 24

St. David's

Right-arm off-break, left hand bat

Big-turning off-spinner Borden will be the most potent weapon in St. George's bowling attack.

With no George O'Brien in the side and only two specialist seamers, the onus is on the spinners. Borden, who ran through Somerset's batting order last season, is a rare commodity in modern cricket - an attacking spin bowler. How Somerset's middle order handles him will be key to the outcome of the match.

Cup Match stats

Batting: Nine innings, 76 runs, 30 high score, 8.44 average

Bowling: 115.3 overs, 14 maidens, 432 runs, 16 wickets, 27.00 average

Chris Foggo, 27

Devoshire Rec

Right-hand bat/wicket-keeper

Wicketkeeper batsman Foggo has looked the part in his previous Cup Match appearances and was a virtual certainty to come back into the side after missing out last year on national team duty.

A lively presence behind the stumps and an aggressive opening batsman, Foggo will be expected to give the holders a quick start at the top of the order.

Cup Match stats

Batting: Seven innings, 179 runs, 33 high score, 25.57 average

Fiqre Crockwell, 24

PHC

Right-hand bat

Since making his debut as a colt last season, Crockwell has gone on to establish himself as one of Bermuda's best young batsmen.

He excelled in the Caribbean with the national squad and performed superbly for Bermuda in the World Cup Qualifiers in South Africa.

He's been influential in PHC's drive towards the top three in the Premier Division and will be expected to improve on a nervous debut last year.

Cup Match stats

Batting: Two innings, 21 runs, 11 high score, 10.50

Landro Minors, 25

St David's

Left-hand bat

The battle for the services of the in-form left hander was one of the side-shows of the pre-match selection hype. Minors hadn't been in great nick until two weekends ago when his Eastern County century rocketed him into the selectors thoughts - in both Somerset and St. George.

But the 'tug-of love' battle for his services which followed has raised his profile and increased the level of expectation.

Glenn Blakeney, 36

Bailey's Bay

Left-hand bat

Stylish left hander Glenn Blakeney has always been a crowd favourite.

A shot maker as well as a 'ball-beater' he has all the tools to play a big role in this year's classic. And with OJ Pitcher and Clay Smith unavailable the holders will need him to be at his formidable best in the middle order.

A good knock could see Blakeney make the St. George's honour roll.

Cup Match stats

Batting: 17 innings, two not outs, 544 runs, 104 high score, 36.27 average (seventh)

Stefan Kelly, 20

St. David's

Right arm medium/fast, Right hand bat

Seamer Kelly is back in the St George's squad after a four-year absence with the burden of leading the attack firmly on his shoulders.

Kelly has matured into a solid and dependable seam bowler. He has yet to prove he can blow a side away, as the more explosive O'Brien did in 2005, but he is generally consistent and has added a yard of pace in the last 12 months.

Cup Match stats

Bowling: Six overs, one maiden, 38 runs, no wickets

Justin Pitcher, 22

St. David's

Right arm medium/fast, left hand bat

Shrugged off a side injury to earn his Cup Match debut with figures of 2 for 59 in the final trial game.

The 22-year-old seam bowler has been on the fringe of the national squad for the past year though injury has curtailed his progress.

With so few specialist pace men in the St George's team he'll be thrown in at the deep end in his first Cup Match.
