FRIDAY, JULY 13: Bermuda’s first ever all female relay race for ladies of all ages is due to take place on Sunday morning in Dockyard.

Former Head Teacher at Saltus Junior School Christine De Silva has been keen to organize an all women’s race because women’s events are becoming increasingly popular around the world.

She noted the way that women in particular bonded in support of each other living healthier lifestyles, and of worthwhile causes.

The idea for a relay came from the obstacle race held earlier this year; the Island Challenge, which used the team concept to great effect.

The idea therefore seemed appropriate as running/walking are popular and common forms of exercise and a relay would enable the teamwork aspect, especially with the teams having to finish together.

The Mid Atlantic Athletic Club organized the race and all sponsorship money is to be donated to the Women’s Resource Centre as well as part proceeds of entry fees.

“The Women’s Resource Centre seemed a natural fit being a charity which ‘provides services related to the empowerment of women’s empowerment and it being an all female race.

The race will also serve to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the charity in suitable fashion,” said DeSilva.

The relay is composed of three 2km legs, but will be run as a ‘train’ whereby the first person runs all three legs (6k), the following runs two legs (4k) and the third only the single leg (2k).

However, all team members must finish the race together, so at the end of each leg the next person joins the team. The race is devised into three divisions. The competitive run and competitive walk, (strictly a walk no running permitted), which are both split into the different entry categories: family, corporate, junior or open.

There is also a non-competitive race for those who simply wish to take part in the event, enjoy the exercise and raise some money.

There is a prize for the team that raises the most sponsorship money, with all teams being eligible.

There are also first prizes to be awarded to the winners of both competitive categories. There are currently a 150 plus people down to compete take part in the race.
