School kids to debate the nuclear issue

More than 100 students will spend their weekend debating the pros and cons of nuclear energy.

The students, participants in the Bermuda Junior Service League’s 16th Annual School Debate Tournament, will be debating for the chance to win the Victoria Cox Memorial Trophy. The trophy is currently held by the Bermuda High School For Girls.

The teams will be judged by more than 50 trained and experienced judges, many of whom are accomplished debaters themselves, at the Bermuda College. Students from 10 Middle Schools and six Senior Schools are participating in this year’s event.

“Debate has become an important part of students’ education and we continue to be pleased and surprised with the participation of students and judges” BJSL Debate Chairpersons Annette Cook and Susan Smith Lorraine said in a press release.

The debate will take place on November 19 and admission is free. It will begin with registration and refreshments at 9am and judges’ registration at 9:15am. The judges’ briefing will take place at 9:30am and the first round of debate will begin at 10am. The second round will start at 11:15am with lunch from 12:15 to 1:15pm. The third round wil begin at 3pm with the finalist announcement at 3:15pm and the final at 4. The Joint Award Ceremony will take place at 5pm in the North Hall.

Victoria Cox, a member of The BJSL, initiated the BJSL tournament 16 years ago to provide a forum for students to compete in a non-sporting event. For more information visit www.bjsl.bm.[[In-content Ad]]
