Saltus celebrates Founder's Day on Friday
THURSDAY, JUNE 10: The annual celebrations honoring Saltus Grammar School founder Samuel Saltus take place tomorrow, Friday, June 11, 2010.
The day will begin with morning assemblies in Lower and Upper Primary Departments. The Upper Primary Department will welcome alumnus Bruce Barritt as the Guest Speaker at their assembly.
At 11:45 a.m. Secondary students and representatives of the Upper and Lower Primary Departments will lay flowers at the grave of founder Samuel Saltus at St. John’s Church. Piper and alumnus Aidan Stones from the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band will play and alumnus Rev. Nicholas Dill will give a blessing.
Those assembled will then process to the Saltus field where they will be joined by Upper Primary students for a brief ceremony. At approximately 12:15, Rev. Nicholas Dill will give a blessing, Headmaster Ted Staunton will speak on the importance of history, the school song will be sung, and the Saltus Jazz Band will play.
Following the service, there will be complimentary lunch for Secondary and Upper Primary students on the field (Lower Primary students will receive their lunch at the Cavendish campus) with activities organized by Upper Primary staff.
The traditional Old Boys vs. Students Cricket Match will begin at 2:00 p.m. The Cricket Match will be followed by the Founder’s Day Reception for alumni at which the SGY Class of 2010 will be welcomed to their first function as Saltus alumni.
In addition, at this reception, there will be prize presentations for the Cricket Match, and pipers, drummers and dancers from the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band will perform (proposed Scottish dances are the “Lilt” and “The “Highland Fling” and they also plan to play their “world famous” Calypso set and “Last of the Great Whales” amongst other tunes).
